Peter Sawkins, from Edinburgh, the winner of last year’s series of the Great British Bake Off, has announced that he will be doing weekly giveaways of his homemade bakes via Instagram in support of men’s mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
Within the UK, 125 people take their own lives – 75% of them are male. CALM work to prevent and raise awareness of suicide and its devastating impact, offering free and confidential frontline services such as a 24/7 helpline and webchat to those in crisis. Through national campaigns, they seek to challenge harmful male stereotypes and encourage positive behavioural change and help-seeking behaviour.
Peter explained: “I am really excited to be supporting CALM and spreading their message about creating a life less miserable. I was treated in my teens for anxiety and am a strong believer that there is huge value in encouraging people to seek help for their mental health when they need support.
Last week in a video on his Instagram account, Peter revealed that he would be giving away his delicious homemade treats until the end of May on an ad hoc basis. Each day’s bakes will be announced via his Instagram story and will be available on a first come first serve basis.
All you have to do to get your hands on some of Peter’s star baker treats is reply to his Instagram story and wait for a reply to confirm that you’ve been successful! Bakes can then be collected from Peter in the George Square or Marchmont area of Edinburgh.
Whilst Peter is giving away the bakes for free, he is encouraging all of his followers to make a donation to CALM whether they win a giveaway or not. Previously he has also announced that he will be running the Edinburgh Marathon at the end of May in support of the charity too, alongside friends and fellow Edinburgh University students Jonny Elsdon, Joshua Wong, and Jamie Donache.
Peter told fans: “At the end of May, a group of friends and I will be running the Edinburgh Virtual Marathon in support of the Campaign Against Living Miserably. I love running, but I’m much better at baking cakes, so we thought, why not use cake to raise money and support CALM’s fantastic work. So, from now until the marathon at the end of May, I will be sharing any baking that needs to find a home on my Instagram stories. If you live in Edinburgh and can make your way to near the George Square area that day, send me a DM, and I will arrange with the first responders to safely hand over the baking. In return, I’ll ask that you donate to CALM through our just giving page that’s linked in my insta bio. So, Edinburgh folks, keep an eye out on my stories, and we’ll hopefully raise some good money and share lots of delicious cake!”
