Edinburgh’s iconic Bross Bagels have partnered with Edinburgh-born business Genius Foods to introduce a gluten free bagel menu at Bross’ venue in Bruntsfield.
As Coeliac UK launch this year’s awareness week with their Shine A Light On Coeliac campaign, Bross Bagels have unveiled their new menu allowing them to cater for those living a gluten free lifestyle following increasing customer demand.
Without the space to dedicate to producing their own gluten free bagels safely, founder Larah Bross has been searching for a solution to offer gluten free options since she opened the first Bross Bagels shop in Portobello in 2017.
Larah Bross, affectionately known as Mama Bross, explains: “Our customers have been begging us to offer gluten free bagels since we launched, and I’ve been trying to find a solution for almost four years now. We’ve looked into many different options, and while I wish we could produce our own gluten free bagels, we don’t have the space to ensure there is absolutely no risk of cross contamination in the baking process."
“I’m over the moon to have found a bagel that meets our incredibly high standard, but that can offer us absolute assurance they are safe for those living with a gluten free diet. I’m even happier the bagels are made by another Edinburgh born-business, Genius. We’re only able to offer the menu safely at our Bruntsfield shop for now, but hope our gluten free fans can enjoy eating in, collection or delivery of some of our Bross favourites.”
Not to worry though – Genius bagels are made in a similar way to Bross Bagels’ beloved, traditional Montreal-style bagels – boiled and baked to give them that signature chewy golden exterior with a fluffy soft middle, meaning that gluten free food fans don’t have to compromise on flavour or texture. Additionally, Genius bagels are gluten and dairy free, and Bross’ Bruntsfield shop will be serving them with a range of gluten free ingredients to create their classic deli delights.
The gluten free options will include a selection of hot and cold bagels and for the time being will only be available at Bross Bagels Brunsfield (165A Bruntsfield Place). The Montreal (£5.50) - cream cheese, lox, pickles, red onion, capers, dill and a squeeze of lemon; The Mama Bross Club (£5.75) – Mama Bross’ Famous Chicken Salad, streaky bacon, lettuce, dill pickles, and Buffamayo; as well as The Hungry Vegan (£5.00) – smashed avocado, cherry vine tomatoes, chilli oil and rock salt, are just a small selection of the many delicious bites to choose from on Bross Bagels’ new gluten free menu.
Laura Gullan, Marketing & Event Executive from Genius Foods said: “As anyone who’s tried it will know, living life without gluten isn’t always easy. At Genius, we strive to create a range of foods that mean being gluten free doesn’t mean missing out. Not only are our Genius bagels gluten free, they’re high in fibre too, making them a great gut friendly option. With Bross Bagels fans across the city and beyond, we’re thrilled to be working in partnership with another Edinburgh food brand to ensure that those with a gluten free diet can brunch or lunch on our bagels filled with Bross’ genius deli fillings!”
Bross Bagels recently opened their brand-new bakery and dining venue at 177 Portobello High Street serving up an exciting new menu and presenting the first licensed premises from the local food favourite. Founder Larah Bross is also set to open Bross Deli - a brand-new concept and their biggest shop yet, in St James Quarter later this year.
