The MacNair brand is excited to unveil their new product development. The newly repositioned MacNair Boutique House of Spirits has released three new rum products which explore wonderful wood flavours as they are matured across hot and cold climates. The brilliant idea comes from renowned industry distiller Billy Walker as he uses his 50 years of experience to bring new incredible flavours.
The launch includes the 12-year-old and 21-year-old Lum Reek Blended Malt Scotch Whisky which lovers of this whisky will see has been given a new, sleek look to complement the new rum line aptly called Exploration Rum. The rum continues to uphold the tradition of the whisky as all the spirits are expertly aged and have integrity. The products are 46% or higher with natural colour and are non-chill filtered and the dual maturation system in hand-selected, innovative casks ensures flavour will be at its utmost.
Billy Walker followed his curiosity to create the new rum. He says; “I’ve long held a desire to explore and apply my expertise to a new spirit category, curious as to what the outcome could be. Rum was an exciting prospect as, in a similar vein to whisky, it allows for greater scope of innovation and experimentation, particularly in regard to maturation.”
MacNair forms part of The GlenAllachie Distillery where Billy Walker is a Master Blender and he has become the custodian of MacNair’s. His defining purpose for the company has been in step with the spirit of 19th Century founder Harvey MacNair and it is where Walker brings his singular attention to detail. The Master Blender has a renowned hands-on approach through which he has earned various accolades.
MacNair’s Boutique House of Spirits is pushing the boundaries of convention to create a wonderful and exceptional range of small-batch spirits. They are invested in enhanced maturation as they believe age and integrity play an important role in the flavour of the whisky and rum.
The beautifully crafted and award winning Lum Reek whisky range will continue with its newly designed look. In order to create this range, the Master Blender Billy Walker sourced the finest vintage single malts from Speyside and Islay, two of the best places in Scotland, which he then combined with aged GlenAllachie to find the perfect balance between gentle peat and a rich, fruity character. The whisky, once blended, went through a second maturation period in different barrels where they extracted different flavours and additional depth from the wood.
The 12-year-old whisky enjoyed a second maturation period across premium American oak barrels, sherry casks and French oak barriques. The 21-year-old whisky spent its time soaking up flavours across Spanish sherry casks, French oak and Virgin oak casks.
The Lum Reek 21-year-old whisky won World’s Best Blended Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2020 and Best Blended Malt Scotch at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021. The 12-year-old won Double Gold at the same competition in San Francisco.

MacNair’s Lum Reek 21-year-old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – 48% ABV. UK RRSP £125

· Nose: Subtle peat smoke, dark chocolate shavings, runny honey, and vanilla fudge.
· Taste: Old leather, cedar wood and gentle undertones of peat, alongside oodles of cocoa, vanilla pods, and sweet spices.
The brand new Exploration Rum range was created by Walker who set out to search for the finest rums which would be enhanced by superlative blending and expert maturation.
There are three rums: a 7-year-old rum, a 7-year-old Peated rum and a 15-year old rum.
These are the first instalment in the Exploration Rum which were sourced in Panama. One of the key ingredients for rum is sugar cane and Panama’s volcanic soil provides the ideal growing environment. Each rum was initially matured in American Oak in Panama in the tropical climate before it was transferred to The GlenAllachie Distillery in Speyside, Scotland which is of course a cooler maturation environment, and the flavours were then elevated by Walker.
The Peated rum went through its second maturation period in casks which previously held heavily peated whisky distilled at GlenAllachie. The other 7-year old and the 15-year-old were matured again over 2 years in casks of red wine, virgin oak and ex-Bourbon.
Walker says; “I’ve spent a great deal of time sampling and tracking down what I deem to be the finest rums from across the world to bring to my lab at The GlenAllachie Distillery and put my own distinctive twist on. The result in this first batch of Panama experiences is what I believe to be a trio of really exciting and unique rums which explore the influence of wood, but also the impact of maturation in a cooler climate.”
The first batch is limited to about 400 cases per expression.
